When you click the name of an account that hasn't federated to your instance yet, it will open on the remote instance. If you wish to follow a remote account, you either have to remote follow (which is clunky and I therefore personally never use it) or search for the full account address to pull the profile to your instance so you can follow it locally.
A naive solution to this would be to always pull new accounts when their names are clicked so they can always be opened locally, but this isn't always the desired behaviour. It would be nice if the user had a choice here.
